GAMA Site
Construction of the GAMA Site on Greenham Common
The GAMA (GLCM Alert and Maintenance Area) site was constructed at in the early/mid 1980‘s and remains a very visible reminder of Greenham Common‘s nuclear and military history and the peace protests of that were a feature around Greenham and Newbury during that decade.
The hardened shelters were constructed to protect GLCMs (Ground Launched Cruise Missiles) from possible attack and were designed to withstand a thermonuclear airburst explosion above the airbase or a direct hit from a 500lb conventional bomb.
The following photographs were taken during construction of GAMA and clearly show the scale of the construction.
The photos were supplied by Tom Morehouse Jr. who was a Captain in the USAF and was based at Greenham common between 1983 and 1986 and was one of the construction managers on GAMA.
NB the black and white photograph is dated June 1982. None of the other photos are dated.
